Hands on Science Had a Fantastic British Science Week 2019
The theme for British Science Week 2019 was “Journeys”, celebrating the many incredible journeys that take place in science, nature, technology, and everyday life. Across a series of engaging and interactive workshops, pupils were encouraged to think like scientists, engineers, and explorers as they investigated how journeys shape the world around us.
Our exciting activities explored a wide variety of scientific journeys. Children discovered the science behind physical journeys, learning how different forms of transport move across land, sea, air, and even space. From understanding how planes fly to exploring space travel and engineering achievements such as the Channel Tunnel, pupils developed a deeper appreciation of innovation and design.
The workshops also focused on journeys of knowledge, highlighting important scientific discoveries, famous explorers, and the pathways that can lead to careers in STEM. Pupils were inspired to consider how curiosity, experimentation, and perseverance drive scientific progress and open doors to future opportunities.
Through hands-on investigations, learners explored biological journeys found in the natural world, including life cycles, animal migration, and environmental systems such as the water cycle. Activities encouraged children to think about how living things grow, adapt, and survive through continuous change and movement.
We also examined the journeys of everyday materials and objects, investigating where products come from, how they are made, and what happens to them after use. Pupils explored important environmental topics such as recycling, waste management, and the impact of plastic pollution on our oceans, helping them understand the role science plays in creating a more sustainable future.
The “Journeys” theme provided a fantastic opportunity to inspire curiosity, creativity, and problem-solving, while showing pupils how science is connected to every journey we experience in our world and beyond.
