We scored top marks at Newchurch Primary School Isle of Wight with 2 days of science workshops during British Science Week. Read on to see what they reported back to parents…
This week is National Science Week and we were delighted to welcome Jamilia from Hands on Science to lead some exciting practical workshops for the children in Years 3, 4 and 6. The children in Year 6 found out all about Nebulas, Supernova, Constellations and Light years. They then made their own star viewer to help find constellations. In Year 4 the children enjoyed taking part in lots of experiments relating to sound. They found out about animal’s hearing, ultrasound, how much sound reduces over distances and how we can detect the direction of sound. Mia H said “I really enjoyed listening to the magnified sounds such as a pin dropping and a clock ticking.” They then constructed their own sound makers out of coat hangers and used them to make lots of unusual sounds. The children in Year 3 investigated how forces, energy, friction and structure have to be balanced in a race. They had a fantastic time designing, making and racing elastic band racers. We were very impressed with their creativity, teamwork and unusual race tactics!
